Cementing is done by drilling a large hole to contain the casing. The space between the hole and the casing is then filled with bentonite, a material which has the particularity of swelling on contact with water, which will make this space completely waterproof.

Since June 2003, the Quebec government has adopted a new regulation on groundwater catchment works. Now the well should be located:

• at a minimum distance of 30 meters from a leaky wastewater treatment system at a minimum distance of 15 meters from a sealed wastewater treatment system at a minimum distance of 30 meters from a crop plot

However, it is possible for the well to be located at a minimum distance of 15 meters from a leaking wastewater treatment system when cementing the well.
